Known only from south Kerry and west Donegal, H. speciosa is very like its more frequent cousin H. obscurata (formerly H. japonica). Separating the two requires examination of the underside. In H. speciosa this is smooth and shiny, white to tan coloured (not yellow-spotted on a web of hyphae).

• Lower surface of thallus with an outer layer or cortex: white or tan
• Lower surface without yellow or orange spotting or a web of fibrous hyphae.
