A common foliose lichen forming rounded, flat, shiny-grey patches on bark or stone. The overlapping lobes are criss-crossed with a network of white, raised lines or ridges (like the creases in folded paper) from which emerges a dull grey, granular mixture of fungal hyphae and algae (soredia). The square-ended lobes are anchored by rhizinae (root-like structures) which develop from the black underside.

Key characteristics

  • Grey leafy lichen with a conspicuous reticulum of white lines
  • Lobes never with surface warts or projections (isidia).
