This grey powder lichen lacks the bluish component of other common species of the genus and is composed of large, evenly-sized granules (0.1–0.2mm diam.); it has no medulla and is soft to the touch. Through a lens you will see that each grain has some hyphal threads projecting from it like the antennae of a TV aerial. The thallus is K+ yellow. The species is widespread in Ireland on acid rocks and trees.
