This is an easily overlooked crustose epiphyte with a minutely granular, grey-green or brown thallus and spherical discs (perithecia) that deflate slightly when dry. It occurs on mature, mossy trees especially in long-established woodland. It is probably very thinly scattered and is almost certainly under-recorded in Ireland.

Key characteristics

• The grey, granular thallus overgrowing moss on mature trees with comparatively large perithecia (0.10-0.22mm diam.) helps to suggest candidates for this species
• Microscopic measurement of the spores is required to confirm it, though there are few similar species with flask-shaped fruits (perithecia) that occur in the same habitat. Agonimia octospora has a distinctive minutely-scaly thallus.
