This is a tricky species to identify and one that deserves more critical study. Essentially, it resembles the common crustose epiphyte B. rubella (described elsewhere) which has granular-warted thallus. The discs of B. assulata are smaller, and the spores, shorter (c.50ųm) by comparison with B. rubella (c.60-70ųm). It also has a different thallus that is not granular-isidiate. The species is known in Ireland from Counties Kerry and Carlow. It grows on ash and poplar, also Eucalyptus.

Key characteristics

• Similar coloured discs to B. rubella but with a different thallus, smaller-sized discs and shorter spores
• B. assulata has darker discs than B. phacodes.
