Aspen is Northern Ireland's only native species of poplar (Populus). It is found in two sorts of habitat: beside rivers and canals in lowland situations, and on scree slopes and mountain cliffs e.g. along the basaltic scarp. The leaves tremble in the lightest of breezes, which has given rise to alternative names like 'quaking asp' or 'quakin' esp'.
