Known as herb bennet or wood avens, this is a yellow-flowered herbaceous perennial up to 2 ft (60 cm) tall, occurring fairly commonly in shaded ground by woods or in hedges. The fruiting head is bur-like, with the individual achenes (one-seeded fruits) carrying a hook.

It hybridises readily with water avens (Geum rivale).
