A tiny plant with even tinier white flowers which forms cushions or lawns in wet or sometimes dry places: on sand dunes, beside springs, in flushes, damp hollows etc. Very common.
It can be divided into four subspecies or varieties on the basis of the patterning of the seed coat. Most recorders have not recorded the subspecies, but it is probable that subsp. fontana is the commonest.
