Grey seal Halichoerus grypus

Tracks of the grey seal (not to scale)

TRACKS & SIGNS: Seal tracks are very distinctive. The two front feet which are modified as flippers have five clawed toes. The size of the track depends on age and sex, male tracks being bigger than females. The tracks of the grey seal cannot be confused with any other Irish mammal, except those of the common seal. The drag marks of the body will always show between the tracks. Droppings are not often seen as grey seals usually defecate in the water. Moulted fur is occasionally seen during the summer.
