Easily identified, as the discs of this species form dense black specks on the thallus of Candelariella vitellina (growing on acid-rock surfaces, not bark). Under the microscope the uppermost tissues of the disc (epihymenium) test K+ bright emerald blue. In Ireland, the species is known from north Kerry.
