This is a lichenicolous fungus that occupies the fruits of Xanthoria parietina. It occurs on its host most frequently in coastal locations. It is almost certainly under-recorded in Ireland, where it is probably frequent in suitable habitats.

Key characteristics

• The blackening of the discs thus obscuring their usual orange colour in Xanthoria parietina immediately suggests this species
• The fungus may also affect the rest of the host.
