Dots on hard limestones are always a challenge for the lichenologist. This species of Verrucaria has a cracked, whitish to pale brown thallus that is often raised above the adjacent rock and ringed by a dark brown line. The discs (perithecia) form prominent projections; the spores are in the range 11-21 x 6-9Ám. V. dufourii is similar but has a sunken apex to the discs. Northern and western Ireland.

Key characteristics

  • Always on hard limestones; thallus visible as pale brown cracked stain, ringed by a brown line often raised above the weathered rock
  • Perithecia prominent; spores without distinctive perispore.
