A pioneer coloniser of wet rocks in small watercourses especially those threading through long-established woodlands V. denudata has a smooth, often translucent, pale green to brown thallus and rather sharp, conical black-tipped perithecia showing where the thallus cover has begun to erode. With a mean length of 21.5m, the spores are on the small side. In Ireland, the species is local.

Key characteristics

  • Pioneer aquatic lichen of small unpolluted watercourses; thallus pale green to brown, smooth and thin, discs (perithecia) conical almost pyramidal, black at the tip
  • Spores rather small.
