This is a rare but unmistakable crustose species of exposed limestone such as pavement habitat (for example, Burren, County Clare). No other Verrucaria appears to have the micro-geometry of this taxon with adjacent thalli separated by numerous black lines converging from different angles and a sometimes pin-pricked surface topography. The conspicuous black, deeply immersed discs (perithecia) are smaller than in V. dufourii which are normally >0.3mm diam.
