Look for this widespread crustose maritime lichen of the seashore within the same zone as the brown seaweeds. The dark green thallus is easily missed or overlooked for the tar spot lichen V. maura. The cracked thallus of V. amphibian, however, is marked by black, angled ridges and flat-capped discs (perithecia). V. striatula (described elsewhere) with a paler thallus, also has black ridges but these are thicker and the discs more rounded.

Key characteristics

  • Thallus very dark green, cracked with black, sharp-angled ridges
  • Perithecia flat-topped.
