A conspicuous bright orange foliose lichen forming large wrinkled rosettes ascending slightly at the margins. Apothecia are often abundant towards the centre of the thallus. One of the most adaptable and cosmoplitan of lichens. A dominant element of the 'Orange Zone', but often abundant in the 'Grey Zone' and in nutrient-enriched environments inland. Xanthoria ectaneoides has rather more slender lobes and generally lacks apothecia.
