This is a lichen of dry granitic overhangs, especially the undersides of large boulders. Search these undersides for small scurfy patches which are pale green when fresh and dotted with exceptionally small (0.10.15mm diam.) red-coloured discs stuck together like warts.

Key characteristics

  • Thallus pale-greenish, often with minute wine-red discs aggregated into clusters (x10 lens to see)
  • Dry granitic boulders: on the undersides, or below overhanging outcrops.
