This common, grey foliose lichen has crowded, overlapping, flattened, tubular lobes that are inflated like a pumped-up bicycle tyre. It forms circular, three-dimensional rosettes. The finger-like lobes which divide towards the tips become capped with a crown of grey, floury soredia (clusters of fungal hyphae and algae).

Key characteristics

  • Lobes inflated and spongy like a miniature air bed
  • Tubular lobes capped with a crown of grey, powdery soredia (never seen in Hypogymnia physodes).
