Look for this species on rocky, siliceous seacliffs squeezed between other lichens. It forms small streaks of red-brown thallus which appears cracked (like shattered glass) into tiny areoles (<2mm diam.) The areoles are spotted with dark brown dots which are the discs. Coastal, scattered in Ireland, probably under-recorded.

Key characteristics

  • Thallus red-brown, eye-catching, shattered into areoles like crazy paving
  • Often forming small streaks; always on siliceous rock.
