This marine Verrucaria is very similar to V. ditmarsica (described elsewhere) but lacks the tiny dark dots (punctae) of that lichen. The narrowly ellipsoid spores (1214 x 23m) also help distinguish it. It should be searched for among barnacles along the shoreline at low tide. In Ireland, the species is known only from the north-east.

Key characteristics

  • Thallus subgelatinous, dark brown without punctae
  • Spores narrowly ellipsoid (longer that in V. ditmarsica).
