This crustose epiphyte grows on the smooth bark of mature trees (especially ash) in the sheltered woodlands of the west. The thin, olive brown to dark brown thallus has conical discs (perithecia) scattered among smaller pycnidia giving the appearance of little and large dots. Under the microscope, the spores are one-septate but are easily broken, separating into part-spores. Local and scattered in northern and western Ireland.
