Foliose lichen, attached at the centre by an umbilicus. Lobes pale or steely-grey to dark brown-grey folded or contorted the upper surface wrinkled and mottled. Undersurface pinkish to pale brown with scattered rhizinae (attachment structures) that project from the edge as a fringe of grey-black fibrils. Discs black and gyrose (like a hazelnut whirl). On course-grained siliceous rocks: mountains. Western and eastern Ireland.
