Look for this species hitching a ride on the back of the common limestone lichen Placynthium nigrum (described elsewhere) in natural habitats such as limestone pavement, quarries and cliffs. Compared to the widespread Toninia aromatica, this species has browner, overlapping squamules without white flecks. In Ireland, the species is scattered, though somewhat local.

Key characteristics

  • On the thallus of cyano-lichens such as Placynthium nigrum
  • Thallus scaly, brown, overlapping like roof shingles; no white flecks present.
