This small, crustose epiphyte of twigs forms tiny patches, often around old leaf scars, at about 40cm or less from the growing tip. It has a grey to olive-brown thallus packed with flat discs; these are almost black in colour, with a thick, grey margin. It is scattered in suitable habitats in Ireland, especially in the south-east.

Key characteristics

  • There are very few species with the appearance of Rinodina sophodes that occur on twigs
  • The abundant, flat black discs surrounded by a plump, grey margin on the leaf scars of ash, and other smooth-barked trees are diagnostic.
