This rarity has only one site in Fermanagh but may occur elsewhere. It is very similar in appearance to Japewiella tavaresiana (described elsewhere) as they both have a similar thin white thallus covered in red-brown discs. It favours smooth barked trees such as aspen. In Britain, it grows on hazel and young ash. It differs from J. tavaresiana in its narrower thin-walled spores (9-14ųm long compared with 8.5ųm long in J. tavaresiana) and darker discs with a soon excluded margin. It has not been recorded from sallow which is a major habitat for J. tavaresiana.
