This species of acid-barked twigs, wooden posts and timber palings is very like L. symmicta (described elsewhere), but is more commonly seen in upland areas. It is distinguished by the darker red-brown (almost black) or piebald colour of the discs. It forms small, granular, creamy-white thalli. Look for it in the slightly lower rainfall areas of Ireland where wood instead of concrete is used for fencing needs. In Ireland, there is a thin scatter of records from north to south.
