This tiny epiphyte is a pretty sight and can grow on the evergreen surfaces of old leaves especially those of box (Buxus) in damp, sheltered situations often by the edge of large plantations. The small, angular discs (to 0.3mm diam.) vary in colour from white to orange and sit on a grey-green, finely granular thallus. It does not always have to be leaves; it will cover larch twigs or spread to stony debris too; local. North and south-west Ireland.

Key characteristics

  • Small, angular, orange discs on hard, leathery leaves of Buxus or twigs of evergreens
  • Always found in damp, sheltered (but well-illuminated) situations.
