Publication Guidelines - Tables and Figures

GENERAL BACKGROUND | FORMAT FOR TEXT | REFERENCES | TABLES AND FIGURES | NOTES AND RECORDS

Tables and figures will be accepted for publication only if they are considered essential by the referee. In cases where a paper requires the inclusion of a number of figures, a contribution towards the cost of the figures may be sought from the author.

Tables should be so arranged that they will fit into the 127mm page width of the Journal and wherever possible restricted so that they occupy no more than a single Journal page. The tables should be numbered with Arabic numbers and each should have a self-explanatory title starting with 'Table X. . . .' justified to the left with a 1.25cm hanging indent. Experimental details should be placed between the title and the tabulated matter. Footnotes should be used only in exceptional cases and should be indicated by superscripted Arabic numerals. Bold horizontal rules should be inserted to separate headings and identifiable blocks of data. Distinguish between a nil result (0) and a missing result (- or × or blank). The tables should appear in the MS immediately after the list of references; do NOT insert in the body of the text.

Line illustrations and diagrams should be arranged so that they will fit the page size of the Journal and numbered consecutively in one series. Text should be of the Arial/Helvetica family of typefaces. Computer-generated diagrams should be printed on good quality paper using a laser printer or high-density ink-jet printer. Diagrams which are not computer-generated should be drawn in black ink on good quality tracing paper or film. Text should preferably be added to diagrams by the use of dry-transfer lettering and not hand-written. Originals should preferably be at least double the size that the figure will appear in print The author's name, a short title of the paper, and the scale of reproduction required together with the number of each figure should be pencilled on the back. Legends to all figures must be typed on a separate sheet of paper, not on the figure. The title should be self-explanatory starting with 'Figure X. ' left justified with a 1.25cm hanging indent.

Half-tone photographs will usually be included only at the author's expense. They must be submitted as high-quality glazed prints showing good contrast. Photographs are referred to as 'Plate X. ' and are numbered consecutively through one volume of the journal. If more than one plate is included in a contribution, the author should indicate dearly the sequence in which they are to appear and the back of the photograph should be labelled as indicated for figures above. Legends for all plates must also be typed on a separate sheet of paper.

Colour photographs will be considered for publication if they are of reproducible quality. Publication of a colour plate is expensive and can be entertained normally if the costs can be met by the author or from sponsorship by a third party. It is possible that the Journal may have access to a source of funding for colour plates and the possible inclusion of a colour plate should therefore be discussed with the Editor.
