|EXCHANGE PROGRAMMES|

The benefits of participating in an exchange of journals can hardly be exaggerated - staff and students within the participating institutions gain access to information which otherwise they could only acquire on a subscription basis (likely to be an extremely expensive undertaking), and their own work is also disseminated more widely.

Institutions can operate their own exchange programmes, formally or informally, using their own in-house publications, but an alternative well worth considering, where such a publication is not available, is having an exchange programme which uses an appropriate journal produced elsewhere, such as the Irish Naturalists' Journal.

The Journal can also run the entire programme - supplying issues at substantial reductions, maintenance of mailing lists, all correspondence and mailing out exchange issues on behalf of the institution. No charge is made for this; the only costs involved being actual costs incurred, for postage and supply of copies of the Journal. This amounts to a considerable saving for libraries, as staff time and other overheads are not included; journals received in exchange would go straight to the participating institution without all the other tasks which can make such programmes laborious.

If your institution is interested in such an arrangement, contact the Hon. Treasurer for more information.
