Goniatites

In Ireland goniatites are found only in Carboniferous rocks (360 to 300 million years old), particularly in the muddier marine sediments above the Carboniferous Limestone. However, they are often crushed and poorly preserved in these rocks, except where they are enclosed by nodules or have been infilled with iron pyrite. They are seldom more than a few cm in diameter and most are relatively tightly coiled and weakly ornamented.

Rocks containing goniatites are confined largely to Fermanagh and parts of Tyrone.
