A perennial species about 6 ins (15 cm) tall with a rosette of round leaves and a spike of white bell-shaped flowers. Intermediate wintergreen (Pyrola media) is very similar but the style is shorter and straight in P. minor.

In woods, coniferous plantations, glens and scrub, mostly in Cos Fermanagh, Antrim and Londonderry.
