Most of the populations of this small native annual occur about Lough Neagh, Lough Erne and north Co. Down, on sandy or gravel shores. It lacks the peppery taste of Persicaria hydropiper.

It is also known as the 'least water-pepper', and an alternative scientific name is Polygonum minus.
