Elodea nuttallii Hydrocharitaceae Nuttall's Water-weed
Elodea nuttallii
Map updated: March 2008
Species Description:
Nuttall's water-weed is similar to the Canadian pondweed (Elodea canadensis) and, like it, is an alien species originating in North America. It grows in the same sorts of places as E. canadensis but is a much more recent arrival - the first reports in Northern Ireland were in the mid-1980s, and the earliest report in Great Britain was in 1966.

It has spread rapidly in the last twenty years, by vegetative means only. Like E. canadensis, only female plants occur in the British Isles.

All names: Elodea nuttallii (Planchon) H.St.John
