Wet woodland

Wet woodland at Hollymount National Nature ReserveWoodland of a type called fen carr or willow-alder carr will develop beside lakes on fen peat. The principal tree species involved are alder (Alnus glutinosa) and sallows (Salix cinerea, S. aurita and other Salix spp.). Birch (Betula pubescens) can also invade at a later stage.

Similar wet woodland will form on old cut-out raised bogs, and this is a common feature of the Northern Ireland lowland landscape.
