Walls and masonry

Bridge at SpinkweeMortared walls, whether of buildings, boundary walls or bridges, are generally a good habitat for plants, especially if the mortar is an old soft lime mortar rather than a hard cement. Many species would not occur in some parts of Northern Ireland if it were not for the availability of walls for colonisation and spread. Mortared walls allow the spread of lime-loving plants into areas of acidic rock.
