Shingle beaches

These have a fairly diverse flora from high water mark upwards. Below high water mark tidal disturbance of the shingle and the salinity prevents any growth of vascular plants.

Plants found on shingle include all those species listed above for a sandy shore, plus:

Shingle banks are thrown up by sea action and are subject to occasional disturbance by storms. This disturbance prevents most land plants from effectively colonising them. However, very old, long-undisturbed shingle banks (such as those at Kearney, Co Down) can support such species as:Shingle beach at Kearney, Co. Down
