This term is used to describe a natural wood composed of small trees such as hazel, blackthorn and birch. It frequently develops on or below rocky cliffs such as those of the basalt scarp in Cos Londonderry and Antrim, or the Carboniferous limestone area of Co Fermanagh.
The ground flora is similar to that of other natural woodland.
