Muddy shores
Where the shore is made up of mud or fine silt, certain flowering plants which are adapted to growth in saline conditions can thrive between low and high water marks:
- Zostera spp. (Also below low water mark to considerable depths)
- Salicornia spp.
- Eleocharis parvula
- Eleocharis uniglumis
- Spartina x townsendii
- Spartina anglica
Around about HWM a muddy foreshore usually gives way to the formation of a salt marsh, which has a distinctive structure and flora.
