Europe from Spain to Turkey; northwards from North Africa to southern Germany; formerly in southern England but now extinct there. Threatened by loss of habitat in many countries

Taller than the otherwise rather similar Spiranthes spiralis. A rare species of damp pastures, ascending to 1200 metres. Flowers about a month or more before S. spiralis
