Western Mediterranean region of Europe but exact limits of distribution are unclear. Closely related to Ophrys bertolonii and perhaps a hybrid of that species with O. sphegodes subsp. atrata, or a local variant. The lip is not so strongly curved forwards as in O. bertolonii. Photographs: Gargano peninsula, E Italy, 2002.
