Scandinavia; the mountains of Europe southwards to the Italian Appenines, Carpathians and the Balkans.

A distinctive species with very dark red flower spikes and a strong scent of vanilla. Pastures and open woodland. At low altitudes in Scandinavia. Elsewhere in mountains from 1000 to 2800 metres.
