Very widespread, across Europe and Asia from Ireland in the west to Japan; from northern Spain, France and Italy northwards to southern Scandinavia.
Wet calcareous soils; wet hollows in sand dunes; old limestone quarries. It ascends to 1600 metres in the Alps.
