There are lots of books of Earth Science interest, some more technical than others, and some full of pretty pictures! Books containing specific information on the north of Ireland include:
Regional Geology of Northern Ireland, by H.E. Wilson. HMSO, Belfast (1972).
This is the 'standard' information for Northern Ireland and is currently being updated. Available from the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland.
General maps include the 1:250,000-scale maps for Solid and Drift, both published in 1997 by the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland. Other maps of the north of Ireland are available from the Geological Survey of Ireland.
A geological map is essential for the geologist, and these are generally pretty good.
The Explore series of leaflets give car and cycle routes around the Sperrins, Lough Neagh, South Antrim, West Sligo, West Breifne, Upper Erne, and Cuilcagh. These are inexpensive and colourful, and available from the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland.
Ideal for a Sunday afternoon drive!
The Landscapes from Stone series comprises field-friendly guides to the geology of various walks in Co.Fermanagh and Co.Cavan, available from the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland.
These are easy to use, colourful and informative: highly recommended.
The Northern Ireland Environment and Heritage Service have produced two booklets: The Building Stones of Belfast by Paddy Gaffikin, and A Geological Excursion Guide to the Causeway Coast by Paul Lyle. These are available from many bookshops.
