What is geology?

Geology is the study of the components of the Earth, including its structure and composition. Geology includes more than just rocks!

If the Earth is like a library, then rocks represent the books in the library. Open them up, explore them, and we can read or interpret the evidence of former events and processes that have shaped the Earth.

Geology is therefore Earth's history - but it is also Earth's future. Understanding past climates, for example, can better help us to plan for future climate change, such as global warming - or even the next Ice Age!
