Cookstown area, Co.Tyrone (Botany)
With Ronnie Irvine

Meet 11.00am in Loughry College Car-park (NGR H 812 750). Take A29 from Dungannon towards Cookstown. About a mile before reaching Cookstown, turn right at Garden Centre on the right. Loughry College gates are immediately ahead - drive straight into car park.

We will visit 2 areas:

1 A stretch of river in Loughry College grounds which runs loosely between Carboniferous Limestone bluffs. It has a number of interesting ferns including Southern Polypody, Hard Shield Fern and Black Spleenwort. A wide range of unusual alien plants which have washed down river from old estates can be seen. Giant fescue also grows in the area. The limestone bluffs themselves have occasional fossil shells and a few corals.

2. An old Carboniferous Limestone quarry (also containing fossils), known as Cummings Quarry, which has been out of use for perhaps 60 years or so. It has spoil heaps which contain a wide range of orchids, including Bee Orchids, Fragrant Orchids, Common Spotted Orchids, Twayblades and also hybrid orchids. Marjoram and Dog Daisies grow abundantly around the quarry sides and bird-sown Cotoneasters have gained a foothold.
